Walkonen, Lagasse Qualify for NCAA Championship

NEW YORK - Boston University senior Andrea Walkonen and junior Erin Lagasse qualified for the NCAA Women's Cross Country Championship at the Northeast Regional meet on Saturday morning at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. Walkonen finished second and Lagasse was eighth in the 247-runner field to help the Terriers to an eighth-place finish out of 34 teams with 228 points.

Walkonen completed the 6k course in 20:57.8, just over a second behind the regional winner, senior Danette Doetzel of Providence. Lagasse followed in 21:46.8 to claim the final automatic individual qualifying spot in the region. The Friars captured the regional championship with 36 points and Syracuse finished second with 90 points. The top two teams automatically advance to the national championship and the top four individual finishers not on those teams qualify as well.

Junior Sarah Mosser finished 53rd in the meet, crossing in 22:56.6, and freshman Katie Matthews and sophomore Kathleen Davies rounded out the scoring, finishing in 83rd and 84th place in 23:21.9 and 23:24.5, respectively.

Senior Mollie Zapata (106th, 23:45.7) and freshman Molly James (171st, 24:44.0) completed the BU contingent at the regional meet.

Walkonen and Lagasse will now compete at the NCAA Women's Cross Country Championship on Monday, Nov. 24, in Terre Haute, Ind.
