
Terriers Fall to Portland, 74-62

Iowa City, Iowa - The Boston University women's basketball team dropped a 74-62 decision to Portland on Sunday afternoon on the final day of the KCRG-TV9 Hawkeye Challenge. Junior Aly Hinton led with 13 points, while seniors Kristi Dini and Christine Kinneary added 12 points apiece, as the squad now falls to 2-2 on the season. The Pilots improve to 2-3 overall.
Kinneary pulled down four rebounds, dished out six assists and collected five steals in 40 minutes, while freshman Caroline Stewart grabbed a career-high 10 boards. As a team, BU was 35.4 percent from the floor and 33.3 percent from behind the arc. The Terriers posted 28 in the paint and 23 points came from the bench.
To start the game, BU found itself in a 24-9 hole, as the Pilots went 8-for-9 from the free-throw line through the first 13 minutes of the contest and scored 12 off turnovers. At 6:58, however, Kinneary broke a nearly seven-minute scoring drought with a fast break layup, sparking a BU 8-0 spurt. Senior Jesyka Burks-Wiley followed up with a layup of her own and Kinneary forced a Portland turnover and posted an additional two to cut the deficit to nine points, 24-15, with 5:57 remaining in the first stanza. Two made free throws from Kinneary 30 seconds later brought BU to within seven, 24-17.
Portland took a 31-24 advantage into the locker rooms at halftime, as the teams went back-and-forth with scoring through the final six minutes of the stanza. In the first half, BU was able to penetrate Portland's defense, posting 14 in the paint, while the Pilots' took advantage of 11 Terriers' miscues with 15 points off turnovers.
To start the second half, Portland opened on a 10-5 spurt to bring the lead back up to 14, 43-29. After more back-and-forth action, BU closed to within 11 points, 50-39, with 11 minutes remaining when freshman Alex Young drained a 3-pointer for her first trey of the game.
Portland's Laiken Dollente posted her 25th point on two made free throws to bring the score to 61-47 with 5:43 remaining, but minutes later, BU brought the deficit down to 10 on five-straight points.
The Pilots took home the 74-62 win, backed by a 27-point performance from Dollente and three additional players in double figures.
Kinneary was named to the all-tournament team.
BU will return to Boston for a match-up with Northeastern on Tuesday, Nov. 25 at Matthews Arena. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
