BOSTON - The Boston University wrestling team opened its 2008-09 season on Saturday evening with a pair of home victories, posting a 49-0 shutout against Wagner before securing a 37-6 win over American International. Eight Terriers were victorious against both of their opponents on the night.
Junior Abbie Rush pinned both of his opponents at 141 in the first round, beginning with a 1:52 fall against Jacob Villaret in the opener. He earned a even quicker fall (1:23) against AIC's Martin Mitchell.
At 149, Mike Roberts got his senior year off to a good start, registering a fall at 1:46 against Wagner's Ryan Cornell and posting a 10-6 decision over the Yellow Jackets' Sam Gauvine.
Freshman Hunter Meys - the national high school record holder for pins in a career with 216 - picked right up where he left off, beginning his collegiate career with a first-period pin against Wagner's Ryan Malloy at 174. He later earned an 11-3 major decision against AIC's Jason Pagan.
Sophomore John Hall, who finished second on the team in wins last year with 20, had the same success as Meys, posting a fall at 1:10 of his 197-pound match with the Seahawks' Mark Wagner before a 15-3 major decision versus AIC's Morgan Wanzer.
A second-period escape and riding time was all junior C.J. Inglin needed in his 165-pound match against the Seahawks' Sean Quinn. In the second dual, Inglin put together an impressive 15-0 technical fall versus Michael Ramsey.
Redshirt freshman Freddy Santiate (125) opened the Wagner dual with a first-period fall before winning by forfeit against AIC. Dan Kennedy, another redshirt freshman, made his collegiate debut at 184 and came away with two wins - a 10-3 major decision against Peter Morano (Wagner) and a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Yaakov Bloch (AIC).
At 133, sophomore Alex Cournoyer recorded a dominating 13-1 major decision in his bout with Wagner's Nicholas Keshecki before suffering a first-round fall against Jeff Haddad of AIC.
In the 157-pound bouts, senior Ben Mandelbraut held off Nick Dalcero of Wagner, 9-8, before classmate Carlo Ferrandino came through with an 11-5 triumph over AIC's Joshua Mayville.
After winning by forfeit against Wagner, senior heavyweight Jim Connors closed the night with a 7-4 triumph against AIC's Kevin Valencia.
The Terriers will return to action next Saturday (Nov. 15) when they travel to compete in the Brute/Binghamton Open in Vestal, N.Y.
