Roberts Paces Terriers with Fifth-Place Finish at Southern Scuffle

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Led a fifth-place finish by senior Mike Roberts (149), the Boston University wrestling team finished 17th out of 28 teams at the 2008 Southern Scuffle, hosted by UNC-Greensboro on Monday and Tuesday. In all, 12 Terriers competed in the two-day tournament.
Roberts reeled off four straight wins, including a pin, to reach the 149-pound semfinals, where he dropped a 5-1 decision to Navy's Bryce Saddoris. After a narrow 1-0 loss to Binghamton's Donnie Vinson in the consolation semifinals, Roberts defeated Pete Yates - his quarterfinal victim - with a 9-4 triumph in the fifth-place match. Roberts was attempting to defend his 149-pound title from last year's Southern Scuffle.
Redshirt freshman Fred Santaite (125) was the only other Terrier to reach the quarterfinal round, winning his first three matches before suffered an injury default against Ross Gitomer (Virginia) with a spot in the semifinals on the line.
Seniors Carlo Ferrandino (3) and Ben Mandelbraut (2) won a combined five matches in the 157-pound bracket, while freshman Hunter Meys (174) picked up a pair of wins in the tournament. Senior Jim Connors (285) and freshman Andrew Swank (149) each posted one victory in their respective classes.
Now finished with tournaments until the CAA Championships, the Terriers will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 11, when they travel to Rutgers for duals against the host Scarlet Knights and Army.
