STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Senior Mike Roberts (149), sophomore John Hall (197) and freshman Hunter Meys (174) all finished third in their respective brackets for the Boston University wrestling team at the 2008 Nittany Lion Open, held Sunday on the campus of Penn State. All three Terriers reached the semifinal round, where they lost before all rebounding with wins in the third-place matches.
In addition to the trio of third-place finishes, other BU standouts on the day included juniors Ryan Goddu and Abbie Rush, who combined for seven wins in the 141-pound bracket. Senior Jim Connors (285) won a pair of matches and senior Ben Mandelbraut (157) and redshirt freshman Dan Kennedy (184) each won an opening-round bout.
Roberts opened with a pair of major decisions before earning a 7-5 win over Rider's Nick Weaver in the quarterfinals. After a hard-fought 3-1 loss to Navy's Bryce Saddoris in the semifinals, Roberts recorded a 6-3 decision over Binghamton's Justin Lister in the third-place match.
At 174, Meys started the day off with his team-leading seventh and eighth falls of the year. After a 10-2 major over Rider's Rob Morrison earned him a spot in the semifinals, Meys dropped a 7-3 match to Penn State's Quentin Wright. In the third-place bout, Meys defeated Navy's Luke Rebertus, 4-1.
Hall kicked his day off with a 6-4 win over Penn State's Nathan Andrews and advanced to the semifinals on a medical forfeit. He dropped a 7-0 decision to Maryland's Hudson Taylor before earning third-place following another medicial forfeit.
The Terriers will take a break from competition for finals and the holidays before returning to action on Dec. 29-30 at the Southern Scuffle, hosted by UNC-Greensboro.
