BOSTON - This weekend the Boston University women's rowing team will co-host the second annual Charles River Challenge, facing crews from Dartmouth, Gonzaga, Harvard/Radcliffe, Northeastern, Notre Dame, Syracuse and Texas. Racing begins on Saturday, April 19 at 9 a.m., continuing at 5 p.m. that night and again at 7 a.m. on Sunday, April 20.
Texas, Radcliffe and Syracuse all return from last year's Challenge. In the regatta last year, BU's varsity eight came in second to USC and just ahead of Columbia. All of the varsity boats finished second in their races, while the novice eight won its race over two other crews in 7:47.9.
BU opens the spring season with a 3-1 record, claiming both the Kittell and Playfair cups so far this year. The Terriers' only loss came to a very fast Yale crew. Boston U also raced Dartmouth last weekend, defeating the Big Green by three and a half seconds.
In the last time out for the Longhorns, Texas fell to California by 18 seconds in the varsity eight on April 12. Northeastern defeated Syracuse by nearly 12 seconds in the Orange Cup the same day. Radcliffe finished second to Princeton, while Notre Dame won all six races it entered at the Indiana Invite and Gonzaga did not race last weekend.
Following the Charles River Challenge, the women's rowing team has the next weekend off before co-hosting the second annual Beanpot on May 3.
