WORCESTER, Mass. - Boston University men's crew will race in the 2008 EARC "Eastern" Sprints on Sunday, May 18 on Lake Quinsigamond, starting at 8:36 a.m. with the second freshman eight race.
Last season, the varsity eight finished second in the Petite Final to place eighth overall, improving four spots over its 12th place finish in 2006. The first and second freshman boats finished sixth and second, respectively, in their Grand Finals, while the second varsity boat won its Third Level Final to finish 13th overall. The third varsity boat placed sixth in its morning race.
BU's 1V is seeded 12th and will face top seed Brown, sixth seed Columbia, seventh seed Syracuse, 13th seed George Washington and 18th seed Holy Cross. The Terrier JV is ninth ranked and will race No. 3 Brown, No. 4 Northeastern, No. 10 Navy, No. 15 Holy Cross and No. 16 Dartmouth. The fourth-ranked 3V is up against first and fifth-seeded Harvard eights as well as eighth seed Georgetown and ninth seed Princeton.
BU will race two freshman eights - the first eight is 14th seeded, and its opponents will be No. 2 Princeton, No. 5 Northeastern, No. 8 Navy, No. 11 Dartmouth and No. 18 Rutgers. The 2F is a finals only race, and the seventh-seeded eight will race second seed Yale, third seed Cornell and sixth seed Navy.
Although BU has yet to take the title since the inception of the Eastern Sprints in 1946, the Terriers earned their best overall varsity finish in 2005 when the team placed fourth. Not only was that BU's best-ever finish, but it also marked the Terriers' first trip to the Grand Final since 1990 when the team placed sixth.
