BOSTON - The JV eight and varsity "A" four each finished second and the varsity eight placed third as the Boston University women's rowing team tied to place second at the Beanpot on the Charles River Saturday morning.
Radcliffe scored 18 points, and won the varsity eight, to claim the trophy and the team banner for the second straight year. The Black and White also retained the Allen-DeWolfe trophy with the varsity win. Northeastern's nine points tied with BU, followed by BC (3) and MIT (1).
In the closest race of the day, BU's varsity "A" four came off the line second and had to fend off a moving Northeastern crew at 500m while Radcliffe surged ahead. The crews were dealing with a very strong tailwind, with a chop increasing down the course to rough water in the final 500m. The Terriers started to move at 750m to pull even with Radcliffe at 1100m. Harvard's women only had a two-seat lead at 1500m. BU handled the conditions in the last 500m well, and it was a sprint to the finish between Boston University and Radcliffe, which the Black and White won by one seat.
The BU varsity eight had a poor start and couldn't find their rhythm in the rough conditions. The JV eight had a solid race and improved their ranking for Eastern Sprints coming up on May 18 in Camden, N.J.
In the varsity "B" four, Radcliffe took a one length lead at 500m and held it to the finish. Northeastern had a five-seat lead at 500m in the novice eight and pulled away from there. The Terriers' six-seat caught a crab in the final 20m and nearly couldn't recover her oar.
BU next races on May 18 when the Terriers compete in the Eastern Sprints in Camden, N.J.
