CAMDEN, N.J. - Boston University men's crew will head to the 106th Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship, held on the Cooper River from Thursday, June 5 to Saturday, June 7, to face some of the best rowing programs in the nation.
BU will field five boats - two varsity eights, two varsity fours and a freshman eight. The varsity eight is seeded 15th, the JV is seeded 16th and the freshmen are 19th. Neither of the fours are seeded; the coxed four will race in a time trial to establish which of the crews has the opportunity to qualify for the Grand and Petite Finals and which could go to the Third and Fourth Level Finals.
Thursday Schedule
Varsity Eight - 8:12 a.m.
JV Eight - 9:00 a.m.
Freshmen Eight - 10:00 a.m.
Straight Four - 11:12 a.m.
Coxed Four - 12:00 p.m.
The Varsity Eight: The 15th-seeded Terriers will race in the fourth heat on Thursday, against Michigan, Navy, Wisconsin, Northeastern and George Washington. BU has a 1-2 record against those crews, having not faced Michigan or Navy this season.
The JV Eight: BU is in Thursday's fourth heat as the 16th seed and will face Georgetown, Syracuse, Washington, Northeastern and Holy Cross. The JV has only raced Northeastern and Syracuse, falling to both during the regular season.
The Freshman Eight: The freshmen are seeded 19th and will race Cornell, Princeton, Yale "A", Dartmouth and Hobart in the fourth heat on Thursday. The freshman have only raced Dartmouth out of the heat's opponents. The Big Green won that race.
The Fours: The coxed four will start sixth in the time trial on Thursday at noon, which will establish which crews will qualify for which finals. The straight four will race in Thursday's second heat against Georgetown, MIT, Yale "A", Minnesota and Yale "B".
Last year, the varsity eight won its Third Level Final to place 13th, while the freshman coxed four came in third in the Grand Final to win a bronze medal.
