CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Sophomore Joe Greenspun of the Boston University men’s cross country team and classmate Katie Matthews of the women’s cross country team have been named to the America East All-Academic team. Both Matthews and Greenspun take home their first conference academic accolades.
Matthews put together a solid season on the course and in the classroom, starting off with a seventh-place finish at the season-opening America East Pre-Championship in Williston, Vt. The sophomore went on to capture fourth at the BU Invitational and recorded the highest BU finish at the New England Championships, crossing the line in 17th place. An eighth-place finish at the America East Championships helped the Terriers to a tie for fifth, and Matthews capped the season as the top BU runner at the NCAA Regional meet, crossing the line in 34th-position. Matthews maintained a 3.47 GPA studying speech, hearing and language sciences.
Greenspun was a consistent performer for the Terriers all season and maintained a 3.80 GPA as a biomedical engineering major. The sophomore started the season with a 22nd-place finish at the America East Pre-Championship and followed it up with a 36th-place result at the BU Invitational. Greenspun wrapped up his sophomore campaign by finishing 123rd at the New England Championships at Franklin Park.
To be nominated for the distinction, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve for their team and participate in at least 50 percent of their team’s games or competitions.
