BOSTON - In the spring opener, the 19th-nationally ranked Boston University women's rowing team retained possession of the Kittel Cup, as the varsity eight boat finished ahead of Syracuse by 4.5 seconds Saturday morning on the Charles River. With the victory, the Terriers become the first team in the seven-year competition to repeat as the winner and also pull out the victory at home.
Stroked by senior Alaina Krumbach and coxed by sophomore Alex Thornton, the V8 boat showed nerves at the beginning in the first race of 2009 but quickly found itself in a rhythm and by the 1,000-meter mark pushed ahead to take the lead for good.
In BU's other win, junior Sarah Hughes stroked the V4 boat to victory with a time of 7:57.2 with the Orange in second at 8:06.6.
Syracuse took first in the 2V4, N4, 2V8 and the N8.
Up next for the Terriers is a trip to Camden, N.J., where they will face off against George Washington and Navy for the Playfair Cup on the Cooper River. The race is set for next Saturday (April 4).
