Watch the Terriers Victory over Brown
BOSTON - Ranked seventh in the annual Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Coaches Poll, the Boston University men's crew varsity eight boat will hope to carry over the momentum from last week's thrilling victory over Brown, as it looks to medal in the 107th IRA Championships, a three-day event beginning Thursday on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif. The V8 boat will start things off at 8:45 a.m. locally and will be followed by the 2V8 boat at 9:24 a.m. and the freshman boat at 10 a.m.
Fans will be able to get live results and also be able to follow the races live with audio and video feeds provided through the ECAC website.
In last year's competition, the V8 squad finished 16th, while the 2V8 placed ninth overall. This season, both crews will aim to reach the Grand Final, as they enter with plenty of confidence.
For the first time in the history of the program, both boats reached the Grand Final at the Eastern Sprints in the same year, and the 2V8 boat earned the first-ever medal for either one of the varsity boats.
Besides capturing the Michalson Cup against reigning Eastern Sprint champion Brown for the first time since 1987 this season, the Terriers are currently in possession of the Bill Cup (Dartmouth, Rutgers) and the Lusins Cup (Columbia). Northeastern won the Arlett Cup back in April by 0.6 seconds, and BU only lost to then-No. 1 Wisconsin in the morning heat at the Eastern Sprints by about 0.08 seconds.
In Thursday's morning heat, the V8 boat will race against No. 2 Stanford, No. 10 Columbia, No. 15 MIT and No. 18 Pennsylvania.
Placing in the top two is of critical importance, as the top finishers in the heat will automatically advance to Friday's semifinals, while the other boats will have to compete later in the afternoon in the Repechage to stay alive for a chance to reach the Grand and Petite Finals.
Ranked fifth in the IRA Poll, the 2V8 boat will race against No. 2 Brown, No. 8 Cornell, No. 11 Columbia and No. 14 Dartmouth.
Ranked 13th, the F8 boat will face No. 1 Washington, No. 6 Wisconsin, No. 7 Princeton, No. 12 Northeastern and No. 18 University of California - San Diego.
