BOSTON - Several members of the 2009-10 Boston University women's rowing team had a successful week at the 127th Royal Canadian Henley Regatta, which took place Aug. 4 - Aug. 9 in St. Catherines, Ontario. Junior Mariel Boomgaardt led the way with three gold medals and one bronze, while both senior Sally Machin and sophomore Cheryl Copson each finished first three times.
The three Terriers along with junior Brittany Tovee teamed together in the Under 23 Women's Eight to take first place with a time of 6:20.75, fewer than two seconds ahead of the next competitor. Machin, Copson and Tovee won the U-23 Four, and both Machin and Copson captured gold in the U-23 Quad.
Boomgaardt took first in the U-23 Pair and also placed third in the U-23 Single. Incoming freshman Kate Russell placed second in the Junior Eight, while fellow newcomer Gabby Cutler had the same result in the Junior Single.
In other final results, Tovee finished fifth in the U-23 Pair, and sophomore Claire Kuehnel placed sixth in the U23 Quad.
Earlier in the summer, Sarah Perkins and Ally Brooks traveled to Great Britain to compete in the London Metropolitan Regatta and Henley Women's Regatta, putting up strong performances in the process by reaching the finals in the double.
