2009 Boston University men's crew MVP Josh Novak sat in the six-seat of the varsity eight boat during the entire spring season. He first helped the Terriers stun then-No. 7 Columbia to capture their first Lusins Cup since 2006. Two weeks later at the Eastern Sprints, BU reached the Grand Final as the No. 7 seed by stunning No. 6 seed Syracuse by 0.2 seconds for the final spot.
Novak helped the team continue its momentum by shocking 2009 Eastern Sprints champion Brown with a 3.1 second win, marking their second-ever Michalson Cup victory and first since 1987. During the following week, the V8 boat once again exceeded expectations by reaching the Grand Finals of the IRAs, as the men's crew program earned the Clayton Chapman Award for the most improved team in the country.
