Williston, Vt. - Boston University posted a pair of individual champions and the women's squad captured a victory at the season-opening America East Pre-Championship race this afternoon in Burlington, Vt. Captain Eric Ashe took the men's title with a time of 25:24.16 over the 8K course while veteran All-American Andrea Walkonen took the women's race, covering the 5K course in 17:50.68.
With Walkonen leading the way, the Terrier women placed three runners in the top ten en route to the meet win. Sophomore Katie Matthews crossed the line in seventh place and senior Sarah Mosser placed 10th in the 86-runner field. Junior Kathleen Davies finished 12th for the Terriers and freshman Marita Stressenger had a strong first run for BU, finishing in 19th-place with a time of 19:52.99. BU finished with 49 points on the afternoon, seven ahead of second place Vermont (56) and 14 ahead of third place Maine (63). UNH (73), Albany (89) and St. Michael's (189) rounded out the women's race.
The men's team captured a third-place finish in the six-team meet, behind UNH (39) and Vermont (63), and also placed three runners within the top 10. After Ashe came sophomore Craig MacPherson, placing seventh with a time of 25:49.99, followed closely by teammate Peter Gilmore who finished in eighth with a final time of 26:03.09. Joe Greenspun placed 22nd in the race and senior David Polgar rounded out the scoring for BU, crossing the line in 31st position.
The Terriers are back in action next weekend as they host the BU Invitational, held at their home course of Franklin Park.
