BOSTON - Less than 48 hours after earning a hard-fought 60-56 win at New Hampshire without the services of senior co-captains Scott Brittain and Tyler Morris due to injury, the Boston University men's basketball team visits Hartford on Saturday for a 2 p.m. meeting. Senior Corey Lowe netted a season-high 28 points to lead the Terriers (6-8, 1-1 AE) to victory Thursday night, while the Hawks (2-12, 0-1 AE) fell at Stony Brook, 70-59.
With his performance against the Wildcats, Lowe moved into fifth all-time in the BU record book for scoring with 1,535 career points. He went 12-for-23 (.521), including 3-for-5 from beyond the arc to help the No. 1 scoring offense in the league at 69.6 ppg knock off the top scoring defense (61.6 ppg). John Holland added 13 points, and Carlos Strong posted 11 in the win.
Missing the offensive abilities of Morris, who averaged 11.2 ppg and 3.1 apg in the first 13 games, the Terriers needed to rely more on their defense, and the squad shined with big stops down the stretch. Holding its first opponent below 30 percent from the field this season, BU pressured UNH all night into a 4-for-31 (.129) 3-point shooting performance. Both Holland and Lowe contributed two steals each.
They will face a tough task in trying to guard Hartford's preseason All-America East conference team honoree Joe Zeglinski, who currently ranks third in the league at 16.4 ppg and ninth in 3-point shooting at 37.8 percent. He tallied 22 points and seven boards against the Seawolves. Freshman Charles White added a career-high 12 points in the contest.
The Hawks enter Saturday's meeting looking to snap a 10-game losing streak that includes three contests decided by four points or less to Lafayette, Yale and St. Francis (N.Y.). They started the season by falling at Quinnipiac and then dropping a tough 71-69 decision at Baylor but bounced back with a 75-38 win over Marist and 70-62 victory against Fordham before going on the current skid.
The Terriers own a 38-18 record in the all-time series that dates back to the 1967-68 season. Last year at Hartford, BU stormed out with a 22-7 run and never saw its lead drop below 13 en route to a 72-47. Holland contributed 21 points, while Lowe came close to a triple-double with 10 points, eight rebounds and eight assits.
In the regular season finale at Agganis, the Hawks went on a 28-6 run at the end of the first half and start of the second to take a 44-43 lead with 11 minutes remaining in regulation. The two teams battled to overtime, with Holland draining a clutch free throw with 6.5 seconds left. In the extra session, BU stepped up the defensive pressure and held UH to 0-for-5 shooting to earn a 67-57 win for its first in-season sweep of the Hawks since 2006.
After the conclusion of the two-game road trip, the Terriers will return to Case Gym on Tuesday, Jan. 12, to host UMBC.
