WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Boston University women's basketball team has been chosen as the unanimous preseason favorite for the 2010-11 America East season, following a vote of the league's nine head coaches. The Terriers received all eight possible first-place votes in the poll and 64 total points, the conference office unveiled Thursday afternoon at the 2010 America East Basketball Tip-Off Event. Additionally, junior Alex Young and sophomores Chantell Alford and Mo Moran were named to AE Preseason All-Conference Team.
"We are very excited about being selected first in our conference," said head coach Kelly Greenberg. "Our young players worked hard last year and, basically, came out of nowhere. I am happy for our players. They are a hard-working group and we believe this will fuel them to make sure we finish the season at No. 1 as well."
Hartford garnered the remaining first-place vote and received 56 points, eight points behind the Terriers. Binghamton placed third in the poll with 50 points, followed by Stony Brook (39), UMBC (37) and Vermont (30). Albany (18), Maine (17) and New Hampshire (13) rounded out the nine-team poll.
BU (16-15, 11-5 AE) returns all five starters and 10 letter winners from last season's squad, which exceeded the preseason predicted finish of fifth, finishing third and hosting a postseason WNIT game, aided by an impressive freshman class. AE Rookie of the Year and All-Conference First Team honoree Chantell Alford led the team in points, rebounds and steals, while All-Conference Third Team guard Mo Moran ran the point as a rookie with 4.3 apg. Junior guard Alex Young, another third-team pick, averaged a career-best 14.5 ppg in her breakout campaign, as she developed into the Terriers' go-to perimeter shooter.
"Alex, Chantell and Mo are a very talented trio," continued Greenberg. "They play with a lot of personality and are very fun to coach. We are lucky to have them here at BU."
The trio of guards has been named to the 2010 AE Preseason All-Conference Team with Alford as a unanimous pick. Alford is the lone 2010 first-team all-conference returnee in 2010-11 after a stellar freshman campaign. The 5-10 guard out of Connecticut was the 2010 Rookie of the Year after finishing third in the league with 14.9 ppg, including 16.6 ppg in conference action. She stepped right into a starting role early on in the season and went on to break the freshman scoring record (447 pts), which was previously held by Katie Terhune ('01), BU's all-time leading scorer. At season's end she not only earned the conference's Rookie of the Year honor, but she was also the first AE rookie since Cindy Blodgett (Maine '95) to earn a spot on the first team.
Alongside Alford in the Terriers' backcourt is Moran. Running the point as a rookie in 2010, Moran accumulated 4.26 apg and had the second-best assist-to-turnover ratio in America East with a 1.45 mark. She was also a prolific scorer for BU, averaging 12.4 ppg - the third-highest scorer on the team as well as 12th in the league.
Young, a 5-9 junior, rounds out the trio of Terrier guards. She came into her own as a sophomore and averaged 14.5 ppg, 3.7 rpg and 1.9 apg. Young is an ever-present 3-point threat, connecting on 58-of-169 attempts last year. In addition, she had one of only three 30+ point performances in the league last year.
The 2011 America East Championship first, quarter and semifinal rounds will take place on March 3-6 at Hartford's Chase Arena in the Reich Family Pavilion. The highest remaining seed will host the title game the following week with the winner earning an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament where America East teams have wins in three the last five years.
