Men Place Second, Women Finish 10th at New England Championships

Results

BOSTON - The Boston University cross country teams competed at the New England Championships Saturday afternoon at Franklin Park, with the men’s team placing second and the women’s squad finishing 10th.

Graduate student Eric Ashe paced the Terriers on the men’s side, completing the 8K course in 24:21, good for second place. The Hanson, Mass., native finished 13 seconds behind the championship’s individual winner. Juniors Matthew Paulson (25:07) and Peter Gilmore (25:08) secured 17th- and 18th-place finishes, respectively, while classmate Robert Gibson crossed the finish line in 25:20, good for 27th place. Seniors James Weider (25:58, 76th place) and Ken Haltom (26:22, 125) rounded out BU’s runners.

As a team, the Terriers accumulated 140 points, just two points behind champion Dartmouth (138). Central Connecticut (186), UMass Lowell (191) and Northeastern (195) rounded out the top five.

On the women’s side, junior Katie Matthews was the Terriers’ top runner, securing a sixth-place finish with a time of 17:44. Senior Kathleen Davies crossed the finish line on the 5K course in 18:08, good for 17th place, while sophomore Breeanna Potter grabbed an 83rd-place finish with a time of 19:06. Junior Madeline Steiner (19:18, 101st place), sophomore Marita Stressenger (19:20, 106), junior Mariko Takahashi (19:36, 134) and junior Anna Lukes (19:52, 159) rounded out BU’s runners.

As a team, the Terriers collected 313 points en route to their 10th-place finish. The championship’s top-five teams included Boston College (26), Connecticut (116), Middlebury (163), Maine (181) and Quinnipiac (207).

Both squads will return to action on Oct. 30 for the America East Championships at Franklin Park.
