BOSTON - Racing at home for the first time this season, the Boston University women's rowing team placed second in the Charles River Challenge behind No. 5 nationally-ranked Brown and ahead of Northeastern Saturday morning in wet and windy conditions. Seeded 11th in this week's Eastern Sprints poll, the Terriers stunned the sixth-seeded Huskies in four of the five races.
In the varsity eight race to start the morning's competition, Brown jumped out quickly and never looked back, finishing with a time of 6:27.43 to win its 17th-straight Arlene Gorton Cup. The Terriers' boat stroked by Alaina Krumbach and coxed by Alex Thornton maintained its slight lead over Northeastern in the last several hundred meters to finish second with a 1.5 second margin.
Though BU placed ahead of the Huskies, the Council Cup was not up for grabs, as it will be given away to the higher finishing squad at the Beanpot on Saturday, May 1.
The Terriers' 2V8 boat coxed by Kayla Rivers and stroked by Sarah Hughes also placed second with a 2.11 second lead over Northeastern. BU also placed second in both varsity four races, falling behind the Huskies in only the third varsity eight by a .45 second margin.
Staying on the Charles River for the second consecutive week, the Terriers will next host Rhode Island on Saturday, April 24.
