Coach Bohrer Previews IRAs
CAMDEN, N.J. - Sending four boats to the 108th IRA Regatta, the Boston University men's crew team will compete against 18 schools for the national championship Thursday, Friday and Saturday on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J. Last season under second-year head coach Thomas Bohrer, the Terriers sent both varsity eight boats to the Grand Final to earn the Clayton Chapman Award for most improved team in the country.
Seeded 15th, the varsity eight boat will start off the competition for BU at 8:15 a.m., racing against No. 3 Harvard, No. 4 Princeton, No. 9 Columbia, No. 10 Syracuse and No. 16 Penn. The Terriers have had an up and down season with a Bill Cup victory over No. 7 Dartmouth but also an Arlett Cup loss to No. 11 Northeastern by 1.32 seconds. They finished 12th at the Eastern Sprints in their last race on May 16.
Placing in the top two is important, as the top finishers in the heat will automatically advance to Friday's semifinals, while the other boats will have to compete later in the afternoon in the Repechage to stay alive for a chance to reach the Grand and Petite Finals.
Seeded 11th, the second varsity eight boat will race at 9 a.m. against No. 2 California, No. 5 Wisconsin, No. 8 Northeastern and No. 14 Navy. The Terriers earned a win over the Huskies during the dual-season but then finished ninth at the Eastern Sprints, while Northeastern placed sixth. The top three boats in this heat will advance to the semifinals.
Placing fourth at the Eastern Sprints for its best result in over 40 years, the freshman eight boat is seeded sixth and will compete against No. 1 Washington, No. 7 Stanford, No. 12 Oregon St. and No. 13 Navy. Seeking its first Grand Final appearance since 2005 and its first-ever medal, the Terriers finished the dual season undefeated with wins over No. 8 Columbia, No. 9 Wisconsin and No. 10 Brown. Only the top two boats automatically advance to the semifinals.
BU will also have a boat in the open four race at 10:30 a.m. The Terriers will face Penn, Wisconsin and Harvard with the top three boats advancing to the semifinals.
The Repechage races will begin at 2 p.m. for teams not earning an automatic berth in the morning.
