Box Score
BALTIMORE, Md. - Senior John Holland scored a game-high 24 points and freshman D.J. Irving added a season-high 10 assists, as the Boston University men's basketball team fell at UMBC, 71-67, on Monday night. Seeing their three-game winning streak snapped, the Terriers drop to 8-11 and 3-2 in America East action.
With the score tied at 67 with 24 seconds remaining, the Retrievers' Adrian Satchell hit a layup and later two made free throws after BU missed consecutive 3-point attempts on the ensuing possession.
Satchell was one of four UMBC players to finish in double figures with 11, while AE Player of the Game Chris De La Rosa had 23 points and five assists. Justin Fry and Laurence Jolicoeur each added 10 points, as the Retrievers shot 23-of-47 (.489) from the field and won the rebound battle, 35-28.
Named America East Player of the Week earlier in the day, Holland with his performance eclipsed the 1,900-point milestone and is just 12 away from surpassing BU Hall of Famer Drederick Irving's total of 1,931. Junior Darryl Partin added 18 points, while classmate Matt Griffin contributed 15 off the bench along with six assists.
Two freshmen had solid contributions, as Travis Robinson posted a season and team-high six rebounds. Committing just two turnovers, Irving had the most assists by a Terrier since Kevin Fitzgerald recorded the same amount in 2001. BU finished the night 22-of-56 (.393) and 12-of-34 (.353) from beyond the arc.
UMBC jumped out to a 16-3 run with De La Rosa scoring seven points in the first six minutes. He had a chance to push the lead to 14 but missed a 3-pointer. Robinson grabbed the rebound and fed Holland, who drove to the basket for the layup. After his made free throw and a Retriever turnover, Griffin drained a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 16-11 with 12:21 remaining in the half.
The two teams exchanged baskets the rest of the half with Griffin draining another trey at 1:25 to pull BU within one, 28-27. Jamar Wertz responded with his third 3-pointer, but Griffin set up Partin for a 3-pointer, as UMBC went into the locker room ahead, 31-30.
BU grabbed its first lead of the game, 37-35, at 16:53 in the second when Holland scored from beyond the arc. Satchell quickly tied the game, but Morris came back with an offensive rebound and quick layup.
The Terriers grabbed their largest lead, 64-55, with 4:45 remaining when Irving set up Partin for a 3-pointer. Following a 3-pointer by Jolicoeur, Griffin hit one of his own at 2:54 to put BU ahead, 67-60.
One issue for the Terriers in the second half was foul trouble. They committed their seventh foul just six minutes into the second half, and UMBC took advantage down the stretch to get back into the game. Fry hit two free throws after enticing a foul, and following a BU turnover, De La Rosa drained a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to two, 67-65.
The Terriers missed their final five 3-point attempts of the contest, starting at 1:41. Fry grabbed the rebound and was fouled in the process. He then tied the game at the charity strip, setting the stage for Satchell's heroics.
Jeff Pelage grabbed an offensive rebound with 54 seconds remaining and went to the line but missed the 1-and-1. Satchell then hit the layup off an assist from De La Rosa for the victory.
UMBC finished the game 15-of-21 (.714) at the line, while BU went 11-of-15 (.733). The Terriers had just nine turnovers against the Retrievers' 10, but gave up 24 points in the paint while only scoring 16.
They will next return home and host Stony Brook on Thursday (Jan. 20) at Case Gym with action slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. The first 750 fans through the doors will receive a free BU replica jersey.
