BOSTON - Senior Katie Matthews claimed first place at the 2011 New England Championships at Franklin Park on Saturday afternoon. She posted a time of 17:18 in the 5K event to clinch the victory.
It was the best performance of her career in the New England Championships, and it helped pace Boston University to a second-place finish in the team event. Four of her teammates placed in the top-20 as the Terriers finished with a total time of 1:30:39, just shy of the pace set by first-place Boston College (1:29:49).
Sophomore Rosa Moriello continued her strong season on Saturday, as she placed sixth (17:56). Freshman harrier Eleanor Wimshurst and senior Kathleen Davies finished 15th and 16th, respectively, to round out the Terriers in the top-20. Wimshurst crossed the line with a time of 18:22, with Davies just a second behind her at 18:23.
Junior Nikki Long also ran well, as she finished 35th with a time of 18:40. Seniors Madeline Steiner (58th, 18:59) and Mariko Takahashi (94th, 19:28) also ran for BU, as the Terriers had seven runners among the 269 who competed.
BU will be back at Franklin Park on Sunday, Oct. 23, when the Terriers compete in the Mayor’s Cup.
