Courier Post: Two from South Jersey Land in Rowing Finals
CAMDEN, N.J. - Led by the freshman eight boat's fifth-place finish and the varsity eight's 3rd Level Final victory, the Boston University men's crew concluded the IRA Championships tied-for-eighth Saturday on the Cooper River.
Competing in its first Grand Final since 2005, the freshman eight boat coxed by Tennyson Hunt and stroked by Moritz Franz posted a time of 5:42.006. The Terriers missed out on a medal by 2.2 seconds and on fourth place by 0.293 seconds. California won the event with a time of 5:36.133.
The result marks BU's best performance ever in the event at the IRAs. Previously, the Terriers had reached the Grand Final in 1986 and 2005 but finished sixth both times.
Missing out on the semifinals and the opportunity to compete for a Grand Final appearance by 0.969 seconds, the V8 boat coxed by junior Bobby McGee and stroked by sophomore Todd Sukolsky rebounded with a 2.615 second victory over Dartmouth with Columbia finishing third. The Terriers won the 3rd Level Final with a time of 5:43.406.
The 2V8 boat coxed by junior Allison Pescatore and stroked by Charles Ruprecht finished fourth in the Petite Final with a time of 5:52.866. The V4 boat coxed by freshman Justin Rau and stroked by classmate John Szramiak placed fourth in the Third Level Final with a time of 6:46.161 in the Terriers' first race of the day.
Despite the completion of the IRAs, the 2010-11 athletic season is not over, as track and field members Allison Barwise (high jump), Whitney Ford (triple jump) and Katie Matthews (10,000m) will compete at the NCAAs, to be held June 8-11 in Des Moines, Iowa.
