
Women's Swimming Defeats UMass, 177-118

BOSTON - The Boston University women’s swimming and diving team opened the 2012-13 season with a 177-118 victory over Massachusetts Saturday afternoon at the Competition pool. BU won 11 events before the Terriers secured the victory heading into the final two races.
The BU freshmen made an immediate impact in their first meet as Terriers, as five of BU’s victories were by first-year swimmers. Freshman Stephanie Nasson earned a pair of victories in her BU debut, as she won the 1,000 freestyle in 10:17.18 before returning to claim the 500 freestyle in 5:06.88.
Fellow freshman Mika Spencer also claimed a pair of wins with a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:52.23) followed by a victory in the 100 freestyle (52.84). Classmate Tess Harpur also posted a top time with a win in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.85).
Senior Katie Radin led the way for BU in the backstroke events, claiming first in both the 100 and 200 backstroke events with times of 58.76 and 2:06.17, respectively. Junior Kendra Cheng was right behind her in the 200 back with a time of 2:06.49 while also finishing second in the 200 freestyle (1:53.43).
Sophomore Katie Kenney picked up a pair of wins in the butterfly events. Kenney finished first in the 200 fly in 2:04.03 then later had the top time in the 100 fly (57.30). Classmate Courtney Grace earned a win for BU in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.56.
The Terriers claimed the top two spots in the 200 medley relay with the team of Cheng, Kenney, Karla Ferrera and Alexsa Savage taking first in 1:47.87.
In the diving events, senior Melinda Matyas posted a pair of second-place finishes on the 1m and 3m boards with scores of 253.95 and 255.30, respectively.
BU returns to the pool on Saturday, Oct. 27, when the Terriers travel to Vestal, N.Y., for a dual meet with Binghamton. The competition is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
