BU (1-1) and Richmond (1-1) meet for the second consecutive season on Friday night and for the first time at Case Gym. The Terriers and the Spiders first met during the 1994 North Atlantic Conference Tournament in Burlington, Vt., where Richmond prevailed, 75-72, in overtime. Last season, the Spiders earned a 72-60 victory over the Terriers in Richmond.
BU enters the game coming off a 60-57 loss to No. 14/22 West Virginia Monday night and is ranked No. 23 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll. Senior guard Chantell Alford provided more than half of BU’s offense against the Mountaineers, as she set a new career-high with 30 points, including six made 3-pointers. Alford has led BU in scoring in both games this season and is averaging 23.5 ppg.
Junior Whitney Turner and Alford are tied for the team lead with 8.0 rpg while senior Mo Moran ranks second on the team with 11.5 ppg. Overall, the Terriers are averaging 54.5 ppg and shooting 37.5 percent from the field.
Richmond makes its first road trip of the year after posting a 1-1 record at home with a 71-61 win over Longwood to open the season followed by a 69-63 loss to No. 24 Miami on Monday night. The Spiders are led by senior Rachel Bilney’s 16.0 ppg while junior Kristina King is second on the team with 14.0 ppg. Fellow junior Genevieve Okoro is the third Richmond player to average double-digits in scoring with 10.5 ppg while also leading the team with 11.0 rpg.
Head coach Mike Shafer is in his eighth season at Richmond and owns a 126-96 record with the Spiders. His 2012-13 squad was picked to finish second in the Atlantic 10 Conference after going 23-9 last season and earning a bid to the WNIT.
The Terriers are 20-33 all-time against current members of the A-10 and will face three teams from the conference this season, including Richmond. BU will travel to Rhode Island on Tuesday, Nov. 27, and then host Massachusetts on Wednesday, Dec. 5.
BU’s first road trip of the season will be a short one, as the Terriers will travel across less than two miles to face Northeastern on Tuesday (Nov. 20). The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
