BOSTON - After a two-week break from competition, the Boston University women's rowing team will race at the 38th annual EAWRC Sprints Championships Sunday on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J. The Terriers' third varsity eight boat is one of five BU crews that will take to the water, beginning at 8:10 a.m.
BU is coming off a runner-up finish at the CAA Championship in which the Terriers were the lone team to medal in all three races. Northeastern won the team title by five points and will be in attendance along with third-place finisher Buffalo.
The Sprints will also feature three other league champions in No. 2 Virginia (ACC), Rhode Island (Atlantic 10) and Bucknell (Patriot). A total of 12 schools will be racing with the top three finishers from each of the morning heats advancing to the afternoon's Grand Final.
Seeded No. 2, BU's third varsity eight boat will face Boston College, MIT, Northeastern and Buffalo. The Terriers will look to avenge an earlier defeat to the Eagles at the Beanpot in which BC won by 11.5 seconds. BU lost to the Huskies in that race as well but rebounded with an 18.3-second win over NU on April 28.
Seeking its first Nathanial Case Trophy since 1992, the third-seeded varsity eight boat will face off against Northeastern, Buffalo, MIT, Holy Cross and Boston College at 8:30 a.m. The Terriers are 1-1 this season against the Huskies. They won their first Council Cup since 2005 at the Beanpot by six seconds before falling at the CAA Championship by seven seconds. BU defeated Buffalo by 2.5 seconds at the CAAs and MIT at the Beanpot by six seconds with BC finishing far behind.
The second varsity eight boat enters its race as the No. 8 seed and will race at 8:40 a.m. against Virginia, Massachusetts, Bucknell, Navy and MIT. The Terriers defeated MIT by 11 seconds at the Beanpot but fell to Navy by two seconds on April 21.
Missing out on a gold at the CAAs by 0.1 seconds, the varsity four 'A' boat will race at 9:10 a.m. as the No. 3 seed against UMass, MIT, Bucknell, Navy and George Washington. The Terriers previously defeated MIT by 20 seconds and Navy by seven.
BU will also have a boat compete in the varsity four 'B' Grand Final at 12:50 p.m. against UMass, Rhode Island, Virginia, Northeastern and Boston College.
