CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Following its second straight postseason appearance, the Boston University women’s basketball team was selected to finish third in its inaugural season in the Patriot League, the conference office announced Wednesday morning. The poll was voted on by all 10 league head coaches and sports information directors.
Led by 10th-year head coach Kelly Greenberg, the Terriers received three first-place votes and 128 points to come in third in the poll. Navy, winner of the last three Patriot League tournament championships, was chosen as the preseason favorite with 14 first-place votes and 157 points while Army, the 2013 PL regular season champion, earned three first-place votes and 133 points to finish in second place.
Holy Cross came in fourth with 112 points followed by Lehigh (97), American (87), Bucknell (62), Loyola Maryland (54) and Lafayette (37). Colgate rounded out the 10-team poll with 33 points.
The Terriers are coming off a 24-6 season and their fourth trip to the postseason in the last five years. BU earned its second straight bid to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) and recorded its second postseason victory in program history with a 61-49 victory over Sacred Heart in the first round.
Senior Rashidat Agboola earned a spot on the Patriot League preseason All-League Team after earning America East All-Conference First Team and All-Defensive Team honors last season. Agboola is BU’s top returning scorer after averaging 11.7 points per game last year while also leading the team with 9.0 rebounds per game.
Agboola is joined by classmate Whitney Turner as the two returning starters from last year’s squad. Turner averaged 5.3 ppg and 6.3 rpg a year ago while tying Agboola for the team lead with 1.5 blocks per game. Also returning for the Terriers is senior Danielle Callahan, who starred as BU’s sixth man last year with 7.7 ppg off the bench.
BU opens the 2013-14 season on Friday, Nov. 8, when the Terriers host crosstown rival Northeastern at Case Gym. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
