
Women's Basketball Welcomes Rhode Island to The Roof Saturday

BOSTON – Seeking its first win of the season, the Boston University basketball team welcomes Rhode Island to Case Gym on Saturday (Nov. 16). The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network.
BU leads the all-time series against URI, 11-7, following last year’s 54-29 victory in Kingston, R.I., on Nov. 27, 2012. BU has won eight of the last nine match-ups with seven of those wins coming by double-digits.The Rams and the Terriers have met every season since 2006 and head coach Kelly Greenberg is 5-1 all-time against Rhode Island. The last time the teams met in Case Gym, BU prevailed, 71-44, on Nov. 26, 2011.
The Terriers are 0-2 on the season and are coming off a 76-67 setback at Harvard on Wednesday night. Trailing by 17 points at the half, BU made it a six-point game with 54 seconds remaining but was unable to complete its comeback against the Crimson.
Junior Mollie McKendrick scored a career-high 14 points and senior Whitney Turner matched her career best with 14 points to lead BU at Harvard. McKendrick also grabbed eight rebounds while Turner chipped in six boards and a pair of blocks. Freshman Courtney Latham was the third Terrier to reach double-digits with 11 points while sophomore Katie Poppe pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds.
Through the first two games of the season, senior Danielle Callahan leads the team with 18.0 ppg while Turner is second with 11.5 ppg. Classmate Rashidat Agboola is averaging 10.0 ppg while Poppe leads the team with 8.5 rpg.
Rhode Island arrives in Boston with an 0-2 record following a 64-34 loss to Delaware in its season opener (Nov. 8) and a 65-58 setback at Central Connecticut on Wednesday night. The Rams are coming off a 6-23 campaign in 2012-13 and return 10 players from last year’s squad. Rhode Island was picked to finish last (15th) in the A-10 Preseason Poll.
Through two games this season, sophomores Tayra Melendez (11.5 ppg) and Brianna Thomas (10.0 ppg) are leading the team in scoring while freshman Kiara Palmer is averaging a team-best 5.0 rpg.
Rhode Island has average 50.5 ppg so far this season and is shooting 30.6 percent from the floor, with a 26.3 percent mark from beyond the arc.
Head coach Cathy Inglese is in her fifth season at Rhode Island and owns a 23-94 record with the Rams. Inglese, who also spent time at Boston College and Vermont, owns a 416-347 for her 27-year coaching career.
BU will return to The Roof on Tuesday (Nov. 19) to host Yale. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network. Tuesday is the second annual club sports night at BU Basketball. All PERD club sports can win up to an additional $1,500 in funding for their club sport.
