With a trip to the NCAA Championships on the line, the Boston University women's rowing team will compete in its second CAA Championship on Sunday, May 19, with racing set to begin at 9:30 a.m. on the Occoquan Reservoir in Fairfax Station, Va.
This year, for the first time, the winner of the CAA Championship receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Women's Rowing Championships starting May 31, in Indianapolis. The CAA title will be decided by three boats - varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four. If there's a tie in points, the trophy will be given to the team with the highest finish in the varsity eight race.
The fourth-annual CAA Championship will feature six schools - BU, three-time champion Northeastern (2009, 2011, 2012), 2010 champion Buffalo, Drexel, Eastern Michigan and Delaware.
In last year’s CAA Championships, BU finished second to Northeastern in team points. The competition came down to the day’s final varsity eight race in which Northeastern finished first, seven seconds ahead of second place BU. This spring season, BU’s varsity eight boat defeated the Huskies twice, once by open water in the Beanpot Regatta (April 27) and again at the Eastern Sprints (May 5). BU placed third at the Eastern Sprints in overall points while the Huskies finished in fifth place while Buffalo finished sixth.
