Rising sophomores Vass Ragoussis and John Carter of the Boston University men's rowing team were part of the winning boat that captured the Thames Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta held in Oxfordshire, England over the weekend.
Ragoussis and Carter rowed in the Griffen Boat Club eight boat which defeated the Upper Thames Rowing Club by seven seconds in the head-to-head championship club race held on Sunday, July 7.
Both Carter and Ragoussis were part of the Terrier's second varsity eight boat which placed fifth at the IRA National Championship Regatta in June, missing out on a bronze medal by just .7 seconds in the Grand Final race.
The Henley Royal Regatta is widely considered the most prestegious regatta in the world. First held in 1839, long before existing rowing federations, it has its own set of rules and still uses a knock-out draw with only two boats racing in each heat. The length of the course is 1 mile 550 yards, which is 112 meters longer than the standard international distance of 2,000 meters.
