Former German National Rowing Team member Mathis Jessen has been hired as assistant coach of the men's rowing team, head coach Tom Bohrer announced Friday morning.
Jessen is a 2012 graduate of the University of Washington where he was a member of the 2009, 2010 and 2011 division I IRA National Championship teams and served as the team co-captain his senior year. He was also a member of the German National Rowing U19 and U23 Teams from 2004 to 2009.
"We are very pleased to have Mathis on our staff," said men's head rowing coach Tom Bohrer. "When this position became open I knew that I wanted to hire someone who could bring new ideas and fire to the program. Mathis had a very successful rowing career at University of Washington in which he won 3 national championships and was a world champion U23 rower in Germany. He knows what it takes to win and will be able to reinforce the little things to our team each day in being successful."
Jessen joins the Terriers' staff after serving as the junior rowing coach for RowAmerica in Rye, N.Y. where he also served as a social media and marketing assistant. Prior to his work at RowAmerica, Jessen interned for Nike Inc. in Global Brand Marketing and also served as a communications assistant for the University of Washington Athletic Department. In 2011, Jessen worked for the National Football League's Seattle Seahawks as a player participation analyst and for the Major League Soccer's Seattle Storm as a public relations assistant.
Jessen will work closely with coach Bohrer and associate head coach John Lindberg in the training of all team athletes. He will assist in the team's recruiting efforts and day to day operations of the team, as well as coordinate team travel.
"Mathis truly valued his opportunity to go to study in the US and to compete on a division 1 rowing program," Bohrer said. "Mathis is smart, articulate, and easy to get along with. He is precise in his thinking and how he communicates to others. He will make our team faster and I look forward to working with him."
The Hamburg, Germany native received his B.A. degree in communications and geography from the University of Washington in 2012 and speaks four languages.
