
Women's Basketball Suffers 70-50 Setback at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Boston University women’s basketball team suffered a 70-50 setback to Navy on Wednesday night in Alumni Hall. The Terriers drop to 6-10 on the season and 1-2 in Patriot League play while Navy improves to 11-3 and 3-0 in PL action.
Navy, the Patriot League preseason favorite, evened the all-time series between the Terriers and the Mids to 1-1 following the first conference game between the two.
Senior Rashidat Agboola led BU with 17 points and six rebounds while classmate Danielle Callahan added 11 points. Fellow senior Whitney Turner added nine points and five rebounds.
Navy was led by 23 points from Kara Pollinger while Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year Jade Geif had a double-double with 15 rebounds and 14 points. Audrey Bauer added 12 points and nine rebounds for the three-time defending conference champions.
The Mids entered the game ranked fifth in the NCAA with 9.5 3-pointers per game and connected on 12 shots from beyond the arc against the Terriers to shoot 41.4 percent (12-of-29) and 40.0 percent (24-of-60) overall. The Terriers rank second in the Patriot League with 7.2 treys per game but shot a season low 15.0 percent (3-of-20) from the 3-point line. BU finished with a 35.6 field goal percentage (21-of-59).
Navy owned a 60-34 advantage on the boards and committed 11 turnovers, compared to eight for the Terriers.
The game was tied early at 2-2 before the Mids took a 6-2 lead. The teams traded baskets over the next few possessions with freshman Sarah Hope and Hollinger each sinking 3-pointers. Senior Melissa Gallo added a jumper as the Mids took a 13-11 lead into the first media timeout at 14:43.
The Terriers kept within striking distance but the Mids added to their advantage with a total of seven treys in the first half. Trailing 20-14, sophomore Courtney Latham checked into the game and scored on the next possession but the Mids hit consecutive 3-pointers to grab their first double-digit lead, 26-16, with 10:14 to go in the first half.
Turner brought the Terriers within six points but a 9-0 spurt by Navy gave the Mids a 35-23 lead. The Terriers responded with a 9-0 spurt of their own, including a pair of triples from Callahan, to make it a 35-29 game with 2:32 to go. The Mids added their seventh 3-pointer of the first half and Green closed out the scoring with her first points of the game, as BU headed into the break trailing, 38-31.
Turner opened the second half with a layup but Navy used a 10-2 run to regain a double-digit advantage, 48-35, just over five minutes into the period. Callahan stopped the streak with a pair of free throws and Agboola added a pair of baskets to cut the Mids’ lead to 10, 51-41, with 10:34 to play.
Navy added to its advantage, as Bauer connected on a pair of treys for the Mids and Pollinger added four points to push the lead to 18 points with just over five minutes to go. Agboola hit BU’s last layup of the game with 3:45 on the clock and Turner hit 1-of-2 shot from the free throw line in the final minute and a half, as Navy took the 70-50 victory.
The Terriers return to Case Gym on Saturday (Jan. 11) to host Lafayette. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network. Radio Disney will be on site with music, games, and prizes prior to the game and during halftime. The BU Cheer and Dance teams will be doing face painting and tattoos before the game.
