October 13, 2014 | Women's Cross Country
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - The Boston University men's and women's cross country teams swept the Patriot League Runner of the Week awards, as juniors Michelle Sumner and Kevin Thomas took home their respective honors, the conference office announced on Monday.
Both Sumner and Thomas posted top-10 finishes at the New England Championships on Saturday. Sumner was seventh in the women's 5K with a time of 17:56.08 while Thomas took ninth in the men's 8K with a time of 24:49.39. The men's team placed fifth while the women finished 10th.
It has been a consistent season for both Sumner and Thomas, as Saturday marked another top-10 performance for both harriers. Sumner has been in the top 10 in all three events she has raced this season, including two second-place performances. This is her second Patriot League Runner of the Week award of the year. Thomas' strong showing at Franklin Park was the second straight top-10 finish for the Marshfield, Massachusetts, native; he also placed ninth at the Ted Owen Invitational.
BU will be back in action on Oct. 24 at the Central Connecticut State Mini Meet. It will be the final tune-up for both the men's and women's teams before the Patriot League Championships on Nov. 1.
