Boston University's men's rowing team members and alumni will compete at the 50th Head of the Charles Regatta (HOCR) this weekend. The two day event will run 3 miles along the Charles River with the official start being at Boston University's DeWolfe Boathouse.
Each year more than 8,000 competitors from around the world compete in over 50 events, while an estimated 400,000 spectators line the banks of the Charles River to watch the races.
"The HOCR is the largest rowing regatta in the world, and we are extremely proud that it is in Boston and that the start of the race is at DeWolfe Boathouse," said men's rowing head coach Tom Bohrer. "The Charles River is also our home course. We train on it every day and it always has a lot of energy with all the Boston programs rowing on it, but it feels even more electric during the Head of the Charles. The regatta is celebrating 50 years of racing in Boston and the Terriers have competed in it every year. That is pretty special."
After a very strong silver medal in last year's Club eight, the Terriers' third varsity eight (3V) will start the 4800 meter long head race on second position on Saturday at 2:07pm. The 3V is looking to win the Club eight event against strong competition. The fourth varsity (4V) will start at seventh position and is looking for a top 5 finish in a field of 47 boats.
On Sunday, the Championship Eights start at 2:03 pm with BU's varsity eight (1V) crossing the starting line on 17th position right behind the Naval Academy. Last year, the 1V was involved in a slight altercation while attempting a pass a slower team during the race, costing the Terriers' top boat valuable seconds in the tightly packed competition, finishing 16th overall. The Terriers second varsity eight (2V) will start on 18th position ahead of Wisconsin. This year's 50th HOCR anniversary saw an increase in the overall level of competitiveness, which is well reflected in the large number of international crews present, including numerous national teams.
"Our team has been training hard for the past 6 weeks, and they are excited to race,' said Bohrer. "I am looking forward to seeing what time they can post and to be able to compare that to other programs. I keep my fingers crossed for a clean race with no interferences with other boats. It will be good to get some valuable information of what we are capable of doing so far this year."
Also racing on the Regatta will be BU men's associate head coach John Lindberg. Racing for the Cambridge Boat Club, Linberg is looking to defend his title and course record in the masters 4+. BU boatman Russ Cone is also looking to defend his title in the masters single. After many years of racing in the single, Men's Rowing Head Coach Tom Bohrer will be starting for Union Boat Club in the Masters double on Saturday morning.
In addition to the weekend's competition, Boston University Rowing will be hosting an Open House on Saturday for prospects and their families during the Head of the Charles weekend. Attendees will be able to meet with coaching staff, team-members and tour the facility. Open House hours are Saturday (Oct. 18) between 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. For information on Boston University Rowing's HOCR Open House click HERE
On Saturday evening, BU's Men's and Women's rowing will once again celebrate their alumni at the "2014 Head of the Charles Reception" from 6:00 - 9:00 pm. For information on HOCR Reception click HERE
