The Boston University men’s rowing team continued its spring season on Saturday morning against Northeastern, dropping an extremely close varsity eight race in Arlett Cup competition.
Coxed by senior Justin Rau and stroked by sophomore Vass Ragoussis, the varsity eight boat finished just 2.8 seconds behind Northeastern.
“Both teams went out and battled hard and fought and Northeastern beat us,” said men’s head rowing coach Tom Bohrer. “ I think our guys are rowing well. We've had a lot of very close races but I think our guys are staying focused on improving each week.”
The second varsity eight race was another close one that came down to the last few meters. Coxed by junior Lauren Harvey and stroked by freshman Fionnan McQuillan-Tolan, the 2V8 had a very strong start and lead the race with 100 meters to go. But the Huskies closed and finished ahead of the Terriers by a razor thin margin of 1.1 seconds.
In the third varsity eight race, the Terriers finally broke through and defeated NU’s 3V8 by open water. Coxed by senior Tennyson Hunt and stroked by junior Tim Giroux, the 3V finished with a time of 6:09.3, well ahead of Northeastern, which finished with a time of 6:19.0.
In BU’s final race, the 4V8 and 5V8 defeated Northeastern’s 4V8 by a wide margin. The 4V, coxed by sophomore Maggie Read and stroked by freshman Mike Kapp, finished with a time of 6:19.9, well ahead of NU’s 4V boat which finished with a time of 6:31.4. The Terriers 5V also finished ahead of NU in the race with a time of 6:23.7.
Earlier in the day there was a bit of controversy. At the conclusion of the varsity eight race, Boston University’s V8 boat raised a protest because of an incorrect starting command. The protest was not allowed by officials however because, by rule, a boat cannot protest a start if it continues racing past 100 meters.
Next week the Terriers will travel to Hanover, N.H. to face Dartmouth with racing starting at 9 a.m.
