The Boston University men’s rowing team will be looking to rebound from last week’s close Arlett Cup loss to Northeastern when it takes on Dartmouth and Rutgers on Saturday for the Bill Cup in Concord, N.H. This weekend’s race will mark the 54th race between the schools.
“The Bill Cup with Dartmouth and Rutgers is our longest running competition,” said men’s head rowing coach Tom Bohrer. “Our program started in 1937 and the Bill Cup started in 1937. Rutgers is celebrating their 150th year of rowing this season, so there is a lot of rowing tradition between these schools.”
The Terriers will be looking for their 9th straight Bill Cup victory dating back to 2006. Saturday will be the team’s first road sprint race of the spring season after facing Brown and Northeastern on the Charles River the last two weeks.
“I think the whole team is excited for our Bill Cup race,” said senior co-captain Lenny Futterman. “Away races are always good in terms of keeping the team focused because it forces you out of normal routines. There is a heightened sense of the importance of performance.”
Coming off two very close varsity eight races, the Terriers know this week’s performance is important.
“They are going to be tough,” said Bohrer. “We need to be ready for them.”
Saturday’s race, originally scheduled to take place in Hanover, N.H. had to be moved to the campus of St. Paul’s School in Concord because of the Connecticut River cresting. The race course is two lanes wide, which means that the racing will be staggered. The Boston Terriers will first race against Dartmouth followed by a short break and then face Rutgers.
