The Boston University men's rowing team swept Dartmouth and Rutgers in Concord, N.H. on Saturday to take home the Bill Cup. The victory was BU's ninth straight Bill Cup victory dating back to 2006 and the team's first cup victory of the spring.
Saturday's race, originally scheduled to take place in Hanover, N.H., had to be moved to Turkey Lake on the campus of St. Paul's School in Concord because of the Connecticut River cresting. The race course is two lanes wide, which meant that the racing was staggered as a double dual meet. Dartmouth and Boston University raced to open the morning, then Boston and Rutgers faced off before Dartmouth and Rutgers finished the afternoon.
The day started out with glass water on Turkey Lake but before the races started, a strong and continuous headwind began to build.
In the fourth race of the day, the Terriers' V8 boat, coxed by senior Justin Rau and stroked by sophomore Vass Ragoussis, finished with a time of 6:21.1, well ahead of Dartmouth's time of 6:34.0.
BU's second varsity eight boat, coxed by senior Tennyson Hunt and stroked by freshman Fionnan McQuillan-Tolan, defeated Dartmouth by open water, as did BU's third varsity and fourth varsity eight boats.
In their second set of races on the day, the Terriers took on Rutgers and continued to run the table. BU's varsity eight boat defeated Rutgers by 19 seconds and the second varsity eight won by 43 seconds.
The third varsity eight boat, coxed by junior Lauren Harvey and stroked by classmate Tim Giroux, completed the day's sweep, finishing with a time of 6:38.8, well ahead of Rutgers 7:19.6.
"Across all boats we had great racing yesterday," said senior co-captain Kyle Peabody. "Our team responded well to racing back to back."
With the Bill Cup victory, the Terriers evened out the Bill Cup series with each program winning the cup a total of 18 times. The Bill Cup is the longest running cup race in BU's rowing history, dating back to 1937.
“I thought all of our boats raced extremely well," said men's rowing head coach Tom Bohrer. "We stayed focused on executing parts of the race that we addressed during the week."
The Terriers will travel to Syracuse, N.Y. next Saturday to take on Syracuse for the Conlan Cup and Columbia for the Lusins Cup.
Boston University would like thank St. Paul's School and coach Campbell and his staff for their generous hospitality on Saturday.
