The Boston University men's rowing team will take on Wisconsin for the Jablonic Cup on Saturday at the DeWolfe Boathouse in their final duel race before post-season competition begins.
Racing begins at 7:36 a.m. with BU's fifth varsity eight taking on MIT. The varsity eight race for the Jablonic Cup begins at 9:12 a.m.
The Terriers are seeking their fourth straight cup win this spring after defeating Dartmouth and Rutgers for the Bill Cup on April 20th and Columbia (Lusins Cup) and Syracuse (Conlan Cup) last weekend. The team will look to keep the streak alive vs. Wisconsin heading into the Eastern Sprints on May 18.
"Last week against Syracuse and Columbia we again had solid performances out of our whole squad," said senior co-captain Kyle Peabody. "Wisconsin is a strong and aggressive crew and will serve as an important and valuable test for us as our last duel race before Sprints. Our focus hasn't changed: get faster every day."
The Badgers have won 21 of the last 24 Jablonic Cup matches going back to 1989 but the competition has been extremely close in recent years. In 2012, Wisconsin won by just 0.6 seconds and in 2011 the Badgers edged the Terriers by a slim 0.3 seconds. Last year, Boston University broke through by winning the varsity eight race by 3.2 seconds and sweeping Wisconsin on the day.
"Since I have been here we've had some really good races with Wisconsin," said head men's rowing coach Thomas Bohrer. "Last year we were extremely happy to win but the two years before that the 1V was about .3 seconds from winning. We have a lot of respect for Wisconsin, they're a good program. It seems like always with Wisconsin, we race each other two weeks before Eastern Sprints, then two weeks later at Sprints we are always in the same heat. We are always ranked close together. It wouldn't surprise me if we see them again in a heat race in two weeks."
Also racing against the Terriers and Badgers on Saturday will be MIT, although the Engineers will not be part of the Jablonic Cup competition.
After the races and the cup presentation, the Terriers will honor the team's 15 graduating seniors by hosting a barbeque at DeWolfe Boathouse in their honor, along with family, friends and alumni.
