The Boston University women's rowing team will compete in its first Patriot League Championship on Friday, May 16, with a trip to the NCAA Championships on the line. Racing is set to begin at 8 a.m. on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.
Last year, the Terriers earned an automatic bid to the NCAAs by winning the CAA Championship before joining the Patriot League at the conclusion of the season.
“We are looking for the Patriot League Championship to be our best set of races this spring,” said women’s head rowing coach Stacey Rippetoe. “We are ready to improve upon what we’ve done so far. We feel prepared to race. We need to be sharper and better to earn the chance to go to the NCAAs back-to-back years. Obviously that’s the goal.”
Last year, the Patriot League Championship featured only a six-team field but added Boston University, Georgetown and Loyola Maryland to the fray. With the additional crews competing, this year’s championships will feature two heats for the varsity four, second varsity eight and varsity eight races. The top three finishers in each heat move on to the grand final.
Defending champion Navy will be looking for its second consecutive Patriot League Championship after ending Bucknell's streak of eight straight titles in 2013.
“With there being so many teams in the Patriot League, we have to race in heats and finals,” said Rippetoe. “We need to race twice so we set up the season so we would be prepared for that and be used to racing multiple times. Fitness wise we are ready for that.”
The championship will be scored by total points, with 9 points going to the winner of the varsity four race, 18 to the second varsity eight and 27 to the varsity eight. The school with the most total points in the three races is awarded the Patriot League Championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Rowing Championship in Indianapolis starting May 30.
BU’s varsity eight boat will start things off in the first heat race of the day at 8 a.m. followed but the second varsity eight heat race at 8:20 a.m. and the varsity four at 8:50 a.m. The grand finals will begin at noon with the V4.
