Boston University Men's Rowing will send five boats to the 69th annual EARC Sprints Championships on Sunday at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. The Terriers 3rd place finish in Team Point standings in 2013 was their highest in program history and is well situated to exceed that benchmark in 2014.
"This is the largest squad that we have ever had, with 5 boats competing on Sunday,” said men’s rowing head coach Thomas Bohrer. “There are 15 seniors on the team and they are mixed between all 5 boats. The leadership they have brought to the team and to their individual boats has really helped us this year".
The Terriers’ full day of competition begins at 8 a.m. when the 4th varsity eight (“BU A”) races in the first heat against Northeastern, Cornell, Harvard and Princeton with only the top 3 boats advancing to the afternoon finals. BU’s 4th varsity is currently ranked 1st by the EARC. Also starting in this event will be BU’s 5th varsity, starting as “BU B”.
At 9:00 a.m., Boston’s No. 2 ranked 3rd varsity eight will face off against Northeastern, Dartmouth, Harvard and Holy Cross.
BU’s 1st Varsity eight is seeded 8th and will race No. 2 Harvard, No. 5 Cornell, No. 11 Wisconsin, No. 14 Syracuse and No. 17 Rutgers in the 9:36 a.m heat. The Terriers’ final heat of the morning will be Boston’s No. 2 ranked 2nd varsity eight, starting at 10:36 a.m. against Brown, Yale, Wisconsin, GWU and MIT.
The Terriers’ 1st varsity eight is coming off four straight cup race victories over Wisconsin, Columbia, Syracuse, Dartmouth and Rutgers.
"The team finished up well the last 3 weeks of the season with wins in every boat,” said Bohrer. “The guys felt good about them, but they also know that each week every program is getting faster. Our mission over the last two weeks has been not to be satisfied with our performance and to keep making improvements and gaining speed. The team will be ready to race on Sunday."
"The squad has a lot of momentum heading into Sprints,” said senior co-captain Kyle Peabody. “Our team has worked very hard all year to get faster each day, and we are excited to see the results. I can't wait until Sunday."
After the Sprints, the Terriers next race at the IRA National Championships held in Mercer, New Jersey on May 30-June 1.
