WORCESTER, Mass. — Highlighted by the first gold medal at the EARC Sprints in program history, the Boston University men's rowing team advanced all five boats to the grand finals and won three medals on Sunday at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. The three medals were the most ever won by the Terriers at the Sprints.
After a very successful morning of heat races in which all five BU boats advanced to the grand finals, the first grand final of the afternoon, the 4V, was a huge success for the Terriers. BU's fourth varsity (BU A) and fifth varsity (BU B) boats finished 1, 2 to earn gold and silver medals. The fourth varsity, coxed by sophomore Maggie Read and stroked by freshman Mike Kapp, finished with a time of 5:49.41 to take the gold. The fifth varsity, coxed by freshman Bella Figuereo and stroked by sophomore Rajagopal Srinivas, finished a close second with a time of 5:52.46 for silver followed by Navy (5:54.51), Syracuse (5:57.95), Brown (5:58.17) and Cornell (6:01.12).
The gold medal was the first won by Boston University at the Sprints in program history.
The third varsity grand final was next and matched BU against Brown, Navy, Cornell, Princeton and Northeastern. The 3V, coxed by junior Lauren Harvey and stroked by classmate Tim Giroux, finished with a time of 5:42.69, behind Brown (5:37.25) and Northeastern (5:38.44) but ahead of Princeton, Navy and Cornell and good for a bronze medal, giving BU three medals on the day.
The three medals were the most won by a BU team at the Sprints in program history.
Later in the afternoon, the Terriers second varsity eight boat finished sixth in an extremely close grand final. Coxed by senior Justin Rau and stroked by junior Kep Edwards, BU finished with a time of 5:42.76, 5 seconds behind finals winner Northeastern and only 3 seconds behind bronze medal winner Navy, which finished with a time of 5:39.73.
The varsity eight boat, coxed by senior Tennyson Hunt and stroked by sophomore Matt Maginnis finished fifth in a very close grand final won by Harvard. Racing for the newly named Harry Parker Trophy, the Terriers finished with a time of 5:34.64, just 2.2 seconds behind bronze medal winner Princeton and less than 1 second behind fourth place finisher Northeastern. The BU V8 finished ahead of the varsity boats from Yale (5:35.49) and Cornell (5:37.90).
Earlier in the day, BU cruised through its heat races to advance all 5 boats to the grand finals, another program first.
In the morning's first heat, the Terriers fourth varsity and fifth varsity finished 1, 2 in their 4V race to advance to the grand finals ahead of Cornell, Northeastern, Harvard and Princeton.
BU's third varsity eight was next up, winning its heat race by one second over Northeastern and ahead of Dartmouth, Harvard and Holy Cross.
The Terriers' second varsity won a close heat battle, finishing first ahead of Brown, Wisconsin, Yale, George Washington and MIT.
The varsity eight's heat race proved to be a very interesting one. The Terriers faced off against Harvard, Cornell, Wisconsin, Syracuse and Rutgers with only the top 2 boats advancing to the finals. At the finish, the top three boats were Harvard, BU and Cornell with barely a seat between the three crews. As the boats approached the finish, a swan was struck by the Cornell boat and appeared to land on the boat's bow as the teams continued toward the line. A protest flag was raised by Cornell and the official heat results were not posted until 1 p.m. when it was finally decided that Cornell would be allowed to race as the seventh boat in the varsity eight grand final. Cornell finished seventh in the final.
The Terriers will now have next week off and then race at the IRA National Championships in Mercer, New Jersey on May 30-June 1.
