The Boston University women's rowing varsity eight boat won the "Crew of the Week" poll for the first time in program history on Thursday by the rowing website Row2k for their victory at the Patriot League Championship on May 16.
"We are excited about the award," said women's head rowing coach Stacey Rippetoe. "It is so nice that people took the time to vote. We really felt the support from our alumni, parents and all the people at BU. It is just a nice unifier and we appreciate it."
Made up of Sarah Specht, Claire Richer, Mackenzie Wiler, Emily Lerhe, Kerry Kennedy, Lynn Ratte, Westanna Carleton, Alex Gustafson and Kelly Jackson, the V8 boat entered the final race trailing Navy by five points and needing a victory.
The V8 won with a time 7:14.58 to capture 27 points. Navy finished fourth and earned just 18 points, allowing BU to pull ahead and win the championship by four points (49-45).
The Terriers' V8 boat was also named Patriot League Boat of the Year.
The women's rowing team will now head to Indianapolis to compete in the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive year starting May 30.
