West Windsor, N.J. - The Boston University men's rowing team will send four boats to compete in the 112th IRA National Championship Regatta beginning Friday, May 30, on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. The Terriers will compete in a field of 24 for the national championship over a three-day period.
The regatta will be the final competition for 15 seniors on the men's rowing team.
"The IRAs is something that is very special to all of us," said senior co-captain Lenny Futterman. "After sprints our top boats have been focused on our task like I've never seen before. Everyone pushed to make the most of the two weeks before the national championship. We believe this attention to detail will pay dividends in New Jersey."
The Terriers varsity eight boat is seeded No. 7 in the country and will compete in its first heat race at 8:30 a.m. on Friday against No. 2 California, No. 10 Wisconsin, No. 18 Syracuse, No. 15 Oregon State and No. 23 Gonzaga.
The top two boats of each heat race advance to the semifinals on Saturday, with all other boats competing in the repechage on Friday afternoon.
The Terriers' second varsity eight boat is seeded No. 8 and will compete in its first heat race at 9 a.m. against No. 1 California, No. 9 Wisconsin, No. 16 Oregon State, No. 17 George Washington and No. 24 Florida Tech.
BU's third varsity eight boat is seeded 5 and will compete at 11 a.m. against No. 2 Brown, No. 8 Cornell, No. 11 Dartmouth, No. 14 Penn and No. 17 Drexel.
The Terriers' varsity four boat will also be competing over the weekend with their heat race scheduled to begin at 11:15 a.m. on Friday. The V4 competition will not be part of the overall IRA team point scoring competition.
The Terriers are coming off a strong performance at the Eastern Sprints in Worcester, Mass. on May 18, when they advanced all five boats to the grand finals and won three medals. The three medals were the most ever won by the Terriers at the Sprints.
"This is the 112th IRA, so there is so much tradition," said head men's rowing coach Thomas Bohrer. "This is the race of the year, our championship race. It is obviously the best college rowing in the country with the top west coast schools competing against the top east coast schools so we are excited."
