West Windsor, N.J. - The Boston University men's rowing team advanced all four boats directly to the semifinals in a historic day 1 of heat racing at the 112th IRA National Championship Regatta on Mercer Lake.
Friday’s performance was the third time in the last six years under head coach Thomas Bohrer that BU advanced all four of its boats to the IRA semis and the first time in program history that BU advanced all boats directly from morning heats without having to race in the afternoon repechage.
“I am very happy for the performance,” said Bohrer after Friday’s heat races. “Our goal at the IRAs was to row 6,000 meters which is the distance of 3 races. Obviously not going to the repechage this afternoon is an advantage. I think all the boats had really good races. They raced hard and executed the way we wanted to and all our thoughts now are in preparation for the semis tomorrow.”
The Terriers entered their heat races needing a first or second place finish in a field of 6 to advance directly to Saturday’s semis. All other boats would race later in the day’s repechage to determine the rest of the semifinal field.
In the first heat race of the day, BU’s 7th ranked varsity eight boat finished second behind No. 2 Calif. The V8, coxed by senior Tennyson Hunt and stroked by sophomore Matt Maginnis, finished with a time of 5:43.94, just 3 seconds behind No. 2 Calif. and ahead of No. 10 Wisconsin, No. 15 Oregon State, No. 18 Syracuse and No. 23 Gonzaga.
BU’s 8th ranked second varsity eight was up next and finished second in its heat, also behind Calif. Coxed by senior Justin Rau and stroked by junior Kep Edwards, BU finished with a time of 5:49.72, behind No. 1 Calif. and ahead of No. 16 Oregon State, No. 9 Wisconsin, No. 17 George Washington and No. 24 FIT.
After a 2 hour break between heats in which BU was racing, the Terriers’ No. 5 ranked third varsity boat looked to keep the perfect day going. The 3V8 delivered by finishing with time of 5:54.09, behind No. 2 Brown and ahead of No. 8 Cornell, No. 11 Dartmouth, No. 14 Penn. and No. 17 Drexel.
BU’s varsity four finished off the perfect morning by winning its heat race outright. Coxed by sophomore Maggie Read and stroked by classmate Drew Miller, the V4 finished with a time of 6:34.16, 3 seconds ahead of Navy and well ahead of boats from Colgate, Temple, Princeton and Milwaukee.
Saturday’s semifinal races for the Terriers begin with the 4V at 9 a.m. with the top three boats advancing to the Grand Finals in each race.
Joining the BU men’s rowing team in IRA competition tomorrow will be the Boston University women’s lightweight rowing program, making their first appearance at the IRAs. The No. 5 seeded lightweight varsity eight will kick things off in the first heat race of the day at 8 a.m.
