West Windsor, N.J. - Highlighted by advancing two boats to the Grand Finals and two boats to the Petite Finals, the Boston University men's rowing team competed in the second day of racing at the 112th Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship on Saturday.
BU's varsity four started off the day's racing in good fashion by finishing second in its semifinals race to Washington and advanced to the Grand Final. Coxed by sophomore Maggie Read and stroked by classmate Drew Miller, the V4 finished with a time of 6:45.30, just 1 second in back of Washington and well ahead of Wisconsin, MIT, Temple and Princeton.
The Terriers' V4 will face Georgetown, Brown, Washington, California and Wisconsin in the Grand Final at 9:20 a.m. on Sunday.
The Terriers' 5th ranked third varsity eight was next up and also advanced to the Grand Finals with a third place performance. Coxed by junior Lauren Harvey and stoked by classmate Tim Giroux, the 3V finished with a time of 6:05.30, behind No. 1 Washington (6:01.45) and No. 4 Northeastern (6:03.61) but ahead of No. 8 Cornell (6:07.28), No. 9 Yale (6:10.13) and No. 14 Penn. (6:18.19).
The 3V8 will race against Washington, Northeastern, California, Brown and Princeton in the Grand Final scheduled for 10:50 a.m. on Sunday.
In an extremely close second varsity eight semifinals, the No. 8 Terriers finished fourth with a time of 6:10.56, just .54 seconds out of third place and a spot in the Grand Final. The 2V, coxed by senior Justin Rau and stroked by junior Kep Edwards, was edged out by No. 5 Navy (6:10.02) and No. 3 Northeastern (6:09.37). No. 2 Washington (6:06.49) finished first in a race that pitted the Terriers against 3 of the top 5 boats in the country.
BU's 2V will face Yale, Wisconsin, Cornell, Penn. and Oregon State in the Petite Final at 11:20 a.m.
The No. 7 BU varsity eight boat raced in the second V8 semi of the day as windy condition worsened on Mercer Lake. No. 3 Harvard won the semi with a time of 6:03.89 over No. 5 Princeton (6:05.92), but the real battle was for third place and the final spot in the Grand Final. In the end, the Terriers, coxed by senior Tennyson Hunt and stroked by sophomore Matt Maginnis, could not overtake No. 8 Yale, finishing behind the Bulldogs by 3.7 seconds.
The V8 will race in tomorrow's Petite Final against Columbia, Navy, Northeastern, Wisconsin and Cornell at 12:30 p.m.
"I thought the V4 and the 3V did well and obviously that was the plan, to make it on to the finals," said men's rowing head coach Thomas Bohrer. "The 1 and 2V raced hard. The 2V came up just a little bit short at the end. We'll move on to the final racing tomorrow. We came here to finish as high as we can and the jobs not done yet."
