West Windsor, N.J. - Backed by top-ten finishes in the varsity eight, second varsity eight, third varsity eight and varsity four competitions, the Boston University men's rowing team finished sixth overall in team points at the IRA National Championship Regatta on Sunday.
Lead by a fourth place finish in the varsity four Grand Final and a fifth place finish in the 3V Grand Final, BU totaled 128 points to place sixth out of a field of 24.
The Terriers were also the winners of the annual IRA Chapman Award given to the team with the largest increase in points over the previous year. BU totaled 77 points in 2013 compared to 128 this year for a 51 point increase, beating out second place Yale which had 41.
BU's varsity four started off Sunday for the Terriers, racing in the V4 Grand Final. Coxed by sophomore Maggie Read and stroked by classmate Drew Miller, the V4 finished fourth with a time of 6:29.55, just 2 seconds off the medal stand behind third place California (6:27.61). Washing took home the gold with a time of 6:21.32 with Brown taking the silver (6:24.61).
The Terriers’ third varsity eight was next to compete, racing in the 3V Grand Final. BU raced to an early lead and settled into bronze medal position at the halfway point of the race. Coxed by junior Lauren Harvey and stoked by classmate Tim Giroux, the 3V battled with Brown and Northeastern for third place toward the finish but placed fifth with a time of 5:54.80 behind California (5:47.55), Washington (5:49.75), Brown (5:50.79) and Northeastern (5:53.28) but well ahead of Princeton (6:04.80).
Rowing in the 2V Petite Final, the second varsity eight boat, coxed by senior Justin Rau and stroked by junior Kep Edwards, surged ahead early and never relinquished the lead, finishing with a time of 5:50.29. Wisconsin closed at the end to finish second (5:52.83) followed by Cornell in third (5:53.94).
The varsity eight Petite Final was the last race of the day for the Terriers. The V8, coxed by senior Tennyson Hunt and stroked by sophomore Matt Maginnis, battled Cornell for second place for most of the race and was edged by the Big Red by two seconds. The Terriers finished with a time of 5.45.65 behind Petite winner Northeastern (5:41.46) and Cornell (5:43.29).
On Saturday, the Terriers advanced two boats to the Grand Finals and two boats to the Petite Final. BU's varsity four finished second in its semifinals race to Washington to advance to the Grand Final. The V4 finished with a time of 6:45.30, just 1 second in back of Washington and well ahead of Wisconsin, MIT, Temple and Princeton.
The Terriers’ third varsity eight boat advanced to the Grand Finals with a third place performance in their semifinal on Saturday. The 3V finished with a time of 6:05.30, behind Washington (6:01.45) and Northeastern (6:03.61) but ahead of Cornell (6:07.28), Yale (6:10.13) and No. Penn. (6:18.19).
In an extremely close second varsity eight semifinals, Terriers finished fourth with a time of 6:10.56, just .54 seconds out of third place and a spot in the Grand Final. The 2V was edged out by Navy (6:10.02) and Northeastern (6:09.37). Washington (6:06.49) finished first in a race that pitted the Terriers against 3 of the top 5 boats in the country.
BU’s varsity eight boat raced in the V8 semi on Saturday as windy condition worsened on Mercer Lake. Harvard won the semi with a time of 6:03.89 over Princeton (6:05.92), but the real battle was for third place and the final spot in the Grand Final. In the end, the Terriers could not overtake Yale, finishing behind the Bulldogs by 3.7 seconds.
On Friday, the Terriers advanced all four boats directly to the semifinals by finishing first or seond in all of their heat races to avoid any repechage races.
