PESARO, Italy - With four Terriers reaching double figures, the Boston University men's basketball coasted to an 81-48 victory over the Adriatic Tritons on Saturday night at the Palazzetto dello Sport.
Sophomore Eric Fanning went 5-of-9 from the field and 8-of-9 at the charity stripe in his first start this trip to record a game-high 19 points. Fellow classmate Cedric Hankerson contributed 14 points off the bench, and junior John Papale drained two 3-pointers en route to 13 points. Freshman Cheddi Mosely tallied 11 points, while freshman Nick Havener hauled in a team-high seven rebounds to help BU beat the Tritons at the boards, 44-29.
As a team, the Terriers went 26-of-60 (.433) and earned 15 assists against 20 turnovers. The defense posted six blocks, including two by sophomore Blaise Mbargorba, and limited Adriatic to just four assists against 24 turnovers. The Tritons shot 13-of-53 (.245) and hit just 3-of-26 (.115) from behind the arc.
Adriatic started quickly with a pair of baskets and three free throws for the early 7-0 advantage, but freshman Eric Johnson settled the Terriers down offensively scoring the next four points.
After holding a one-point lead (14-13) at the end of the first quarter, BU trailed for the final time when the Tritons drained a 3-pointer on their first possession in the second. Mosely sparked an 11-0 run in response on the ensuing possession with a trey of his own and then converted his steal into an easy fastbreak layup. Hankerson followed with back-to-back baskets to keep the momentum going.
BU led 36-28 at the half and extended it above 20 (54-32) on a 3-pointer by Hankerson at 4:40 in the third. Highlighted by an emphatic fastbreak dunk that resulted from Johnson's steal, Fanning scored nine points in the fourth to help the Terriers finish the game ahead by more than 30.
The Terriers will continue their four-game schedule in Italy on Monday (Aug. 25) against All-Star Vicenza Basket at Pala Goldini Arena in Vicenza.
