The Boston University men's and women's rowing teams and alumni will compete at the 51st Head of the Charles Regatta (HOCR) this weekend. The two-day event will run 3 miles along the Charles River with the official start line once again being Boston University's DeWolfe Boathouse.
Each year an estimated 400,000 spectators line the banks of the Charles River to watch more than 9,000 competitors from around the world compete in over 50 events.
"The Head of the Charles Regatta is the largest rowing regatta in the world, and we are extremely proud that it is in Boston and that the start of the race is at DeWolfe Boathouse," said men's rowing head coach Tom Bohrer. "We train on the Charles River every day and it is always full of energy with all of the Boston programs. It becomes even more electric when all the visiting crews come in during the week to train, and then race on the weekend. This year we have five boats entered which is just about our entire squad, and we are really excited about that."
The men's varsity eight and second varsity eight boats will race in Sunday's championship eights race beginning at 2:30 p.m. The V8 boat will look to build on last year's remarkable performance when it finished fourth among college boats behind only Harvard, Cal and defending national champion Washington.
The men's third varsity eight (3V) will race in the club eights on Saturday at 2:04pm. The 3V, which took fifth in the club eight race last year, will be looking to win the event this year against strong competition. The fourth varsity (4V) finished seventh in last year's club eights and is looking for a top five finish in a field of 41 boats. BU will also send out a fifth varsity eight boat to compete in the club eights this year.
On the women's side, the club four boat will race at 1:35 p.m. on Saturday. Last year, the women's club four finished a very impressive fifth, ahead of 56 other boats in the large field of 61. The women's Club eight will race at 2:19 p.m., looking to improve on last year's 19th place finish. The BU women's varsity eight boat will compete in the championship eight race on Sunday beginning at 2:16 p.m.
"We love having the Head of the Charles begin at DeWolfe Boathouse," said director of women's rowing Stacey Rippetoe. "There is no way to hide any weaknesses in the world class field of competitors that will be on our home course this weekend. It will take everything we have to compete well and hit the targets we've set for this weekend, and the team is prepared for that."
The women's lightweight rowing team, competing in just their third Head of the Charles, will look to improve on their impressive third place finish in last year's lightweight eight race. The lightweights also took sixth among the lightweight fours in 2014. Racing on Sunday, the lightweight four race is scheduled to begin at 3:53 p.m. with the lightweight eights taking to the water at 4:12 p.m. in the last race of the Regatta.
In addition to the competition, Boston University Rowing (Men's and Women's and Women's Lightweight) will be hosting an Open House on Saturday for prospects and their families during the Head of the Charles weekend. Attendees will be able to meet with coaching staff, team members and tour the facility. Open House hours are Saturday (Oct. 17) between 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. For information on Boston University Rowing's HOCR Open House click HERE
