The Boston University men's and women's rowing teams combined for four top ten finishes during the first day of the 51st Head of the Charles Regatta on Saturday. The men's team entered three boats in the club 8 competition and saw all three finish in the top ten while the women's team finished fifth in the club 4 competition.
In the men's club 8 race, BU's third varsity eight boat, coxed by sophomore Justin Goucher, finished in fifth with a time of 15:32.40. Following closely behind was the Terriers' fourth varsity eight boat, coxed by freshman Sean Dooling, which finished with a time of 15:33.51 and in sixth place. Showing the programs depth, the BU fifth varsity eight boat, coxed by freshman Alexandra Reynolds, finished in ninth place with a time of 5:45.47 in a field of 41.
"I think our performances were very good in the club 8 race," said men's rowing head coach Tom Bohrer. "Those are pretty high finishes relative to the competition here today, so I think those are good results."
On the women's side, BU had a very impressive performance in the club 4 race, finishing fifth in the large field of 63. Coxed by sophomore Emily Phaneuf and stroked by junior Kristina Damm, the Terriers finished with a time of 19:22.18, less than 2 seconds from a third place finish and a bronze medal.
The BU women's club 8 boat, coxed by sophomore Erin Gannon, finished 18th with a time of 18:25.11, ahead of 20 boats in the deep field of 38.
Earlier in the afternoon in the alumni competition, the BU men's alumni 8 took home sixth place while the women's alumni 8 finished 24th. Also in the alumni 8, men's assistant coach and former national champion Mathis Jessen raced with his alma mater University of Washington and finished second.
The 51st Head of the Charles Regatta continues on Saturday night as BU rowing welcomes alumni, family and friends to a reception at the DeWolfe Boathouse beginning at 7pm.
"The Head of the Charles is always a special weekend for us," said Bohrer. "You have 51 years of rowing history with so many of our alumni who rowed in this regatta coming back. Our student-athletes get so fired up for it and want to do well here because they feel like it is their home course. This is such a big weekend and we are looking forward to racing again on Sunday."
Sunday will feature several championship races for the Terriers, with the women's championship 4 race set to begin at 2:16pm, followed by the men's championship 8 at 2:30pm then the women's championship 8 at 2:44pm.
The women's lightweight team will send out four boats on Sunday, two each in the championship 4 (3:53pm) and the championship 8 (4:12pm) races.
