BOSTON - Highlighted by a fifth-place finish in the men's championship eights race, the Boston University men's rowing team combined for 4 top-ten finishes at the 51st Head of the Charles Regatta on Saturday and Sunday.
In the men's championship eight race on Sunday, the first varsity boat, coxed by sophomore MacKenzie Hart and stroked by junior Aleksandar Marinkovski, finished fifth with a time of 14:29.90 in a field made up of 24 of the best collegiate boats in the country. Only crews from Yale, California, Harvard and national champion Washington finished ahead of the Terriers.
"I thought it was a really solid performance by our 1V," said head men's rowing coach Thomas Bohrer. "Overall we feel really good about it. We are right at the top with Yale, Washington and California and that's the company we want to be in."
The BU second varsity eight boat also had a strong showing in the championship eight race. The 2V, coxed by senior Maggie Read and stroked by sophomore Max Ponsen, finished 12th with a time of 14:54.59, ahead of California's 2V boat by 1.2 seconds.
"Technically I thought our 2V was really solid," said Bohrer. "The boat finished ahead of a lot of 1V programs. I think our guys came off the water feeling really good."
On Saturday, in the men's club 8 race, BU's third varsity eight boat, coxed by sophomore Justin Goucher, finished in fifth with a time of 15:32.40. Following closely behind was the Terriers' fourth varsity eight boat, coxed by freshman Sean Dooling, which finished with a time of 15:33.51 and in sixth place. Showing the programs depth, the BU fifth varsity eight boat, coxed by freshman Alexandra Reynolds, finished in ninth place with a time of 5:45.47 in a field of 41.
Earlier in the afternoon in the alumni competition, the BU men's alumni 8 took home sixth place. Also in the alumni 8, men's assistant coach and former national champion Mathis Jessen raced with his alma mater University of Washington and finished second.
Also, Boston University boatman Russ Cone defended his title in the senior master singles race, finishing in first with a time of 19:32.34 ahead of 31 other rowers. Cone was also honored at the annual BU alumni reception at DeWolfe Boathouse on Saturday night for his 25 years of service.
